Quick Test on Droid

This is a quick test of the WP app on my Droid.

How Fast Were You Going?

I just upgraded my DSL line (SBC Yahoo) to a 1.5-3 megabit line. It appears, however, that SBC doesn't "cap" the line at this level. It can actually go up to 6 Mbit. I currently have a d/l speed of 5.2 Mbit and an upload of 508 kbit.

To put in perspective, my first modem was 300 baud, or 300 bits per second. This new line is 17750 times faster.
Or, what I can d/l now in 1 second would take nearly 5 hours at 300 bps,
Or, to d/l a 600 MB file (roughly a CD) takes 15 minutes, would take 193 days, or just over half a year!

Computers Are Your Friend

My hard drive decided it was tired of doing its job, so it quit, but fortunately, it gave me 2 weeks notice. I replaced the drive and have started putting everything back on it. Funny thing is, I had a corrupted drive before, moved everything over to the other drive (the one that is failing), but it was only supposed to be temporary, since I had problems with it before. Well, it won't be causing me any more headaches.

Xbox

Liz got me an Xbox for my birthday. Review to follow, soon.

Dreamcast

Sega has put themselves back on the map with their new Dreamcast system.  In their first day, they sold $97 million worth of systems, peripherals and games.  That dwarfs the previous record holder, Star Wars: TPM, which debuted with $24.7 million.  The games look and play great.  We will just have to see how it holds up after the announcement of the Playstation 2, by Sony, on Monday.

DIVX is Dead

In case you haven't heard, DIVX is dead.  If you are not familiar with DIVX, good, but it was a Pay-Per-View format geared towards the DVD market.  Typically these discs were bare bones in that they did not have wide screen, nor any supplemental content like director's commentaries and making of documentaries.  The biggest flaw in the design, it was not compatible with normal DVD players, which fragmented the market and hurt DVD sales during its first holiday shopping season. One question people kept asking the DIVX folks (Richard Sharp), was what would happen if DIVX were to fail?  Would their

DIVX does not equal DVD

Just had to state it in bold print.  DIVX is not an option of the OFFICIAL DVD SPECIFICATION.  This is an add on.  This degrades picture quality.  They know when you have watched a movie and how many times.  You also don't own the movies you "buy".  You lease them for the machine you have.  With DVD taking off this year, there is a better chance that a friend of yours has a player.  With DIVX, if you lent them your disc, they would have to pay to watch it, even if you bought the disc outright (they call it DIVX Silver, unlimited viewing). Now you might think that this is okay, it gives the stud

DVD

I have had my DVD player for a year now, and I am so glad that this format is finally taking off.  If you are thinking about a DVD player, go for a Sony, Toshiba or Panasonic (those two are the same company).  If it has a DTS logo, that's okay, if it has a DIVX logo, walk out of the store (You see, you are in Circuit City or perhaps The Good Guys) and go to a Best Buy and pick one up.  You can get a Toshiba player for $299 with 5 free movies and a boat load of free rentals.

Voodoo2 Introduction

Blaster 3D Voodoo2Gotta just like this card.  If you don't know what it is, let me tell ya. It is an update to last years hit, the Voodoo card, developed by 3Dfx. It is a 3D only solution, so you keep your existing video card for your 2d stuff.  Now, some may prefer a card that does both 2D and 3D, but as most things go, 2D/3D cards to both well, but not great.  Here is where the Voodoo shines.

Voodoo2 Page

I will be doing my own Voodoo2 page, nothing too elaborate, just some links and current news I think that is important.  Who knows, I may even be able to keep up with it....
